Intuitive Unveils Da Vinci 5 Ecosystem Enhancements

Intuitive announced several recent enhancements across da Vinci 5 and its supporting ecosystem, extended-use Force Feedback instruments, and advancements to boost product and instrument security and reliability.

Over 100 updates and user experience improvements will some become available to da Vinci 5 users. Inuititive Telepresence is a real-time capability that lets remote physicians observe and offer guidance during procedures and includes a new camera that expands visibility to the full operating room. A new live cursor and enhanced audio also improve communication between the OR and remote surgeons.

A mobile login lets surgeons log in to the da Vinci 5 console by tapping their phones to simplify case login and boost security through multi-factor authentication. Six new simulation exercises were added to SimNow 2, Intuitive’s surgical simulation platform.

These updates will become available in measured launches in the U.S., beginning in June. Additional features are also expected to be available later this year in the U.S., subject to regulatory clearance.

A digital ruler will enable on-screen intra-op measurement between 3 cm and 15 cm. Surgeons will be able to begin removal of instruments or the endoscope directly from the console to support more surgeon and care team autonomy. Multi-arm targeting aims to simplify and reduce time for case setup and support more efficient multi-quadrant surgery intra-operatively.

Further, five of the six available Force Feedback instruments have their number of uses increased from six to 15. Intuitive believes these changes will allow it to fully meet customer demand and invest in generating evidence that objective knowledge of applied forces in surgery will lead to improved outcomes.

The company is also significantly enhancing instrument encryption technology to further improve its products’ security and monitoring.
